What is a Two-Stage Air Compressor?

by Ivan Sanchez | Last Updated January 7, 2022

Two-stage compressors are different from single-stage compressors, the latter uses two cylinders and does heavy-duty performance. These air compressors increase the amount of air pressure in a closed space. Pressurized air compressors are used for personal, industrial, and commercial uses as they generate power.

Two-stage air compressors come with two pistons, thus doubling the air pressure as opposed to single-stage air compressors. One of the two pistons pumps air from one cylinder to the other. This dual air pressure is well suited for large scale and powers heavy-duty equipment.

Features of Two-Stage Air Compressors

Two-stage air compressors come with dual cylinders aka storage chambers. These chambers were connected via the two pistons that pumped air into each other. One piston pumps/compresses air into the second chamber that stores the compressed gas for different purposes.

These compressors can be powered by electricity and gas. Electric run two-stage air compressors are much more environmentally friendly and common. Gas-powered air compressors are much more feasible in the event that there’s no electricity. Both of these sources are useful depending on the needs of the user.

The most common purpose of two-stage air compressors is to power pneumatic tools like spray guns, air nailers etc. Various businesses like gas stations, manufacturing plants and others make good use of these air compressors in their heavy equipment. These air compressors can be fixed in one place for long term use and can be operated with a variety of different tools.

Two-stage air compressors are quite power-efficient and save a lot of energy. Since they use more air power in a single piece of equipment, they end up giving out less heat. These air compressors are thus safe to use even without protective equipment since they are generally safe to use. It is quite obvious that two-stage air compressors indeed use less energy to produce much more than traditional sources of generating power.

Two-stage air compressors are ideal for backup use for large scale systems and installations. These are mostly used for medium-scale industrial purposes. All in all, these have large scale and versatile uses and can be relied upon.

The Applications of Two-Stage Air Compressors

Two-stage air compressors have versatile applications as they are well equipped for large scale tasks. These can be used for long durations and give much more efficient results than their counterparts. Depending on the sensitivity of your task at hand, one can pick between a single-stage and two-stage air compressor.

Below are a few of the many applications of two-stage air compressors. These and many other equipments use two-stage air compressors as their source of power.

  1. At petrol pumps
  2. Textile Industry
  3. Pneumatic Devices
  4. Garages and workshops
  5. Plastic industries
  6. Blowering in lawns
  7. At production factories, chemicals etc.

Accessories Required to Operate Two-Stage Air Compressors

Below listed are all the pieces of equipment and tools that are needed to operate a two-stage air compressor smoothly. All these tools may not be required all at the same time but it goes without saying that these should be kept handy in case they are needed.

Like any set of tools, it is important to keep these well maintained. In the event that any of these tools go faulty, they should be replaced immediately. Good quality tools ensure the longevity of the air compressor as a whole.

  1. Air and Drain cock
  2. Safety valves
  3. Non-return valve
  4. Motor slide rail
  5. Motor Pulley
  6. Pressure gauge
  7. Pressure switch
  8. Electric Motor
  9. Motor starter
  10. V-Belt
  11. Oil
  12. FRL unit

Conclusion

As we’ve established above, two-stage air compressors are a reliable, durable and efficient piece of equipment. These offer long term support to their users with minimum effort, as compared to most of their counterparts. Most two-stage air compressors are quite simple to operate and require minimal power through the main source.

For anyone looking for an air compressor, it is much recommended to go for a two-stage air compressor rather than a single one. These would prove to be more counterproductive and efficient than their counterparts.
