How to use a portable air compressor

by Ivan Sanchez | Last Updated February 16, 2022

Portable air compressors are popular for the amazing power force of the tires and also infrastructural sites. They are capable of supplying compressed air to efficiently support almost all kinds of pneumatic tools. In today’s world, a portable air compressor is considered an effective deal due to its impressive advantages.

Furthermore, they are good for various purposes related to basic services and additional beneficial issues and that’s why they are sometimes also called the best digital tire inflator. The basic services include ease of empowering pneumatic material like grinders, inflating tires and gas cylinders, and wrenches. A portable air compressor also provides ease in connecting operating systems with handsome durability.

Why do many people prefer to use portable air compressors? The thing is that they are lighter and smaller than their stationary counterparts but most of them provide the same operating capacity and functionality options. They also include all the same safety features, enabling you to use them at your job sites with total confidence. This article would help to learn how to use a portable air compressor with ease.

Significance of portable air compressors

The significance of air compressors in this modern era cannot be neglected as they are capable of delivering compressed air to some machinery, equipment, and pneumatic hand tools. When it comes to portable air compressors, the ease of instant access to compressed air wherever you need it makes it special, specifically while considering remote construction sites.

The versatile use of portable air compressors

The use of portable air compressors is spread over several industries. They power a wide variety of pneumatic tools at construction sites such as drills, nailing and riveting guns, wrenches, jack and chipping hammers.

They are also very useful in the agriculture industry for applications such as crop spraying, operating pneumatically powered material handling machines, running dairy equipment, and transporting feed on conveyors. In the pharmaceutical industry, the use of air compressors is required while packaging products, applying coatings, operating conveyor systems during the production process, and supplying compressed air to mixing tanks.

Plus, some of the larger manufacturing operators have even permanently installed stationary air compressors where portable models hold significance as backup units during emergencies. As many of them use diesel fuel they usually don’t require electricity to operate.

The use of portable air compressors for powering equipment at remote offshore and onshore is also very common in drilling sites. Installing and removing reactor rods is one of the reasons why portable air compressors are popular in Oil & gas industry.

Get a digital pressure gauge

The first thing you need to do is to buy a digital pressure gauge from any online and offline store to check the current pressure of the tire. Why do you need to buy a digital pressure gauge if you don’t have one?  well, it is simply the best thing you can use for this job. Though it costs very low keeping the pressure gauge in the glove box is necessary.

Note down the pressure

Now start with unscrewing the cap of the valve and keep it near to you or in your pocket. It is just to make sure that you don’t lose it. Press the digital pressure gauge onto the valve system, you will hear a hissing sound. You will also hear this sound while releasing the system.

You only need to do this for a second in order to get a more accurate and precise measure. Now keep your smartphone or a paper close to you in order to note the pressure on the digital pressure gauge.

The most appropriate best time to measure the pressure is when the tire is cold as the tire shows higher pressure in your pressure gauge when it is hot. So, it is recommended to measure the pressure before you go out for a ride.

Find out the pressure needed

Now you need to find out the pressure your tire needs and most of the constructive vehicles’ tires require 100 PSI. But not all the time, actually it depends on the weather, axle load, and the number of tires per axle.

Just check the manufacturer’s manual to determine the PSAI in the tire’s sidewall. Do not fully trust that as it represents the maximum pressure and you need the accurate pressure the tire requires. After checking the required pressure, check the current pressure. Inflate the tire if the current pressure is under the required pressure. In case the current pressure is the same as it needs, it’s already all good to go.

Inflate and fill your tires

Now you need to focus on filling Your Tires. There are mainly 2 ways to inflate and fill your tire. One way is to visit a garage and let them inflate your tire using the portable air compressor. The second way is to buy a reasonable air compressor with a digital gauge, especially a portable one.

It would be better not to go for the cheap portable air compressors since they are not considered suitable for inflating tires quickly. So, it’s time to learn how to inflate the tires with a portable air compressor. Put it near the tire so that the hose can reach all the tires. Always prefer to buy a compressor with a long power cord as well as an air hose. This will help in this process.

Just plug in the compressor and turn it on.

You would hear the sound of a running motor inside the compressor when you plug in the compressor. Now again use a digital pressure gauge in order to fill up the tire with appropriate pressure. Remove the stem caps and press down the hose fitting on the valve stem, then press the lever.

If you are using a common air compressor with a digital pressure gauge, keep your eyes on the gauge sharply. Once it reaches the target pressure, immediately shut off the compressor. Now replace the valve caps and it’s all done inflating the tires using an air compressor. This is how you can correctly use a portable air compressor to inflate tires.
